Before I say anything else let me tell you: DO NOT SEE THE MOVIE 'The Number 23'.
Sorry I've been out of it. My sleeping schedule is completely gone. I have little concept of dates and times anymore. If it wasn't for the fact that I had a job, I would just sleep at random hours, probably through the entire day, and only move around at night. I do believe being a vampire would totally fit my lifestyle. Plus, free food is walking around everywhere.
Rich and Mercedes came in on Tuesday, while we were at work. After work, Annie and I went to our favorite BBQ joint for a nice meal for just the two of us before hitting the town, looking for her brother and calling our other friends. We ordered our usual meat dish but instead of getting two, we ordered just one and an order of samkyapsal (pork). We wanted to try something new. I'm glad we did, because it was nice to change things up, but it was not our favorite. Back to tradition next time we go.
While sitting down eating, we also ordered a new beverage. I believe they have it in America. It is called Coca-Cola. It's the first time we got it at this restaurant because we wanted to try to mix it with soju. Soju apparently mixes with anything, and it tasted quite nice, like a rum and coke.
As soon as our food started to come out, we saw Rob walking down the street by himself. We called out to him and he came over to sit with us. We gave him soju and had a nice time. He was on the phone with John, who showed up about 5 minutes later. The four of us all began eating and talking about what to do that night. Then, Annie and I spotted Rich in the street. Annie ran over and he came over to the table with Mercedes. So what started out as a quiet dinner for two turned into a decent sized group meal. That's just how we roll in Korea.
After eating, we went across the street into Western Vill. We spent a while there just drinking, talking, and meeting new people. We met Dave, a guy from Canada who has been in country about 5 years. Adam, another Brit, whose birthday is close to Annie's so we might do a combo-b-day party at Rosenbrau. We met a few others too, but I mostly was talking to Rob and Rich so I didn't meet anyone new really (although Annie scored Adam's digits, so good for her!)
Annie went off to bed because she was a little tired, but I stayed out for a bit. I first went to go see Rich and Mercedes' apartment with them. Turns out, they live in the same building. Their apartment is the same style as ours, but they have a small staircase that leads up to a loft area where there bed is with a few smaller closets. Very nice set up. They even brought their cat from home and have a little cubby area set up under the stairs for it.
We headed back out and hit Bar Boom. This is a louder place than the others I've been in, but the trade off is drinks are cheaper. We only stayed for a little bit though because I did not like the environment. I wanted to talk, not shout. We headed back down the street and decided to go to a place called Soul Train. It is right next to Western Vill, but stays open later. When we got there, it turns out this is a big hangout for westerners. It was us, Rob, John, and about 8-12 other people. We stayed on the balcony talking and I literally watched the sun come up. It was nice. Made it home around 7:30 and slept until 5 pm the next day.
Annie and I got up late, as I mentioned, and took a stroll down to Western Dom, the shopping center on the opposite side La Festa. We were looking for a dish Rob had talked about where you throw bits of meat and vegetables in a cauldron in the center of the table. The first place we went to did not have it, so I did the point and pray method of food ordering. What came out was a soup that was exceedingly spicy. However, the side dishes at this place were awesome, so they made up for the inedibility of the soup. There were a few eggs, some excellently flavored kimchi, and 2 or 3 other things I did not recognize.
We left the restaurant and headed into Western Dom to a bibimbop place we knew there. While walking, we ran into Bruce Lee and his family wandering around the mall. It was funny to run into the whole family on an outing. We said we would exchange e-mails again this week.
Annie and I window shopped for a bit. I am still upset that we missed getting the coolest Konglish shirt ever. It said, "I am the anti-pizza face". We keep returning to the store we saw it in, but they don't have the shirt anymore. Very upsetting.
We walked back to our place and Robert came over. We hung out for a little bit and then went to Western Vill. Our friend, Serena, had been in Qatar for a week to visit her parents. They are living in Qatar for three years teaching business English. We met up at Western Vill to catch up and have a low key night. We hung out for about an hour, then decided to go get a meal as a group. Rob took us to a chain BBQ restaurant Annie and I had never been to before. For around $12, we got a bowl full of enough meat to make the four of us happy. I really enjoyed the meat, but I have to say the side dishes were a little disappointing.
From there, we went to a DVD room. This was my first time in one and I need to say, it was pretty cool. You get to choose from a plethora of movies that are American, Korean, Japanese, etc. If you are watching a movie not in English, almost all of them have subtitles, so there is no problem there. You give the DVD to the man at the front counter and go to your room. All of the DVD controls are done from the front, but if you want to pause or go back a scene, there is a phone to call the front desk.
The room we went into was a pretty decent size. There was a couch that easily sat the four of us, with two ottomans to put our feet up on. The room had a projector for its screen, so the size of the movie was very large. Plus, the sound is crazy as that's the whole reason the room is set up. You could easily cause some damage to yourself if you turned the volume up even halfway. For $20, the four of us got to watch a movie in English in complete privacy with awesome sound. It was like our own private theater.
After that, we hit up Pirate Bar to end the evening because people kept talking about french fries. We chilled on the balcony and chewed the fat for a while before Annie and I finally went home at around 5 in the morning.
I do have pictures from the past few days, but I am currently posting this at work because it beats grading. I will have a mostly picture only entry when I get home tonight. It also includes a video of an acapella group performing. Stay tuned. |
